Alan Rhody is a multi-award-winning songwriter and touring solo artist whose career spans decades of songwriting, recording and performing. The Kentucky native released his tenth album, Farther On, in 2017. His recordings over the years have featured an impressive group of friends and musical greats, including John Prine, John Hartford, Sam Bush, David Rawlings, Maura O’Connell, Ray Flacke, Jay Patten, Jonell Mosser, Vickie Carrico, Guthrie Trapp and Pat McLaughlin.
Rhody’s music has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and he has made dozens of network television appearances in the United States and Canada. Early in his career, in addition to touring, he sang national television spots for Molson Brewery and Skidoo Snowmobiles while also writing and producing material for radio.
At the heart of Rhody’s career are his songs: imaginative, compassionate stories that move easily between country, folk, rock ’n’ roll, blues and rockabilly. Songs such as “I’ll Be True to You” and “Somebody to Care” showcase his gift for heartfelt storytelling, while songs including “The Wind in Her Hair” and “Charlene and the Quarterback” reveal his humor. “Wild-Eyed Dream,” “Real Big Country” and “Trainwreck of Emotion” demonstrate the breadth of his musical roots and songwriting style.
Rhody’s songs have been recorded by an extraordinary roster of artists, including The Oak Ridge Boys, Del McCoury, Lorrie Morgan, George Jones, Hoyt Axton, Toby Keith, Tanya Tucker, Don Gibson, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Lynn Anderson, T.G. Sheppard, Lee Greenwood, Kevin Welch, Billy “Crash” Craddock, Suzy Bogguss, The Wright Brothers, Michael Martin Murphey, Kieran Kane and Leon Raines.
His tenth album, Farther On, was recorded in Rhody’s home studio, with Rhody singing and playing all the parts himself. His goal was to keep the recording simple and uncluttered, allowing the songs themselves to take center stage. Along with five co-writes and Mickey Newbury’s “Wish I Was,” the album features a collection of Rhody’s solo compositions.
After decades in music, the qualities that have defined Alan Rhody’s work remain unmistakable: truth, simplicity, heart and a remarkable ability to tell a story through song.
